  Orange.

Continuing a little series of photos I've started that feature buildings and other interesting stuff in Downtown Minneapolis. This is the Marquette Building, and I dig it for the intensity of its orange bricks.

I again got access to the roof of the building the studio is in, and was able to shoot a few panoramic shots. Click on the image to view it in its much, much larger form.

City of Minneapolis - Kenwood Water Tower
I Googled up an article about this interesting old water tower, which I've pasted below (without permission - if this is yours, let me know and I will be happy to remove it.) Link to the article.

Historic Watertowers

by Katherine Thomas

Minneapolis is the only city in the United States with three of its very own unused stone water towers. The area's natural artesian wells allow the Minneapolis water supply system to service the bulk of the city by gravitational force. However, at the turn of the century, the high level of elevation in three developing districts left them unserviceable by the city's natural water system. Thus the city constructed three watertowers: Kenwood, Prospect Park and Washburn. All but the Washburn tower were taken completely out of service in 1954 with the construction of the clear water basin in Columbia Heights. The elevation of the new basin was high enough to gravitationally service even these formerly troublesome areas. Only the Washburn tower is still used in the summer months when the water levels are at their lowest.

The Kenwood tower is located on Kenwood Parkway at Oliver Ave. S. The tower is sandwiched between two houses and overlooks a sloping park area. The neighboring trees have slowly reduced the tower's visibility, so it must be looked for to be seen.

Of the three towers in Minneapolis, least is known about this one. The architect is unknown, as is the exact year of the tower's construction. Most sources cite 1910 as the year, however, others cite 1912 or 1914. All that is definite is that the tank was constructed by Chicago Bridge and Iron Works.

The 110' octagonal tower is built of red brick with thick buttresses at each corner. The projecting ribs, narrow rectangular fenestration and Romanesque battlement are reminiscent of a medieval fortress - a familiar design theme at the time of construction. The original stone rail at the top was removed in 1934 and replaced with a pipe. No reason for this could be found.

In 1979, two local residents nearly converted the unused tower into condominiums. I saw pictures. It would have been nifty. There was quite a bit of local support from neighbors who daily watched the tower decay. They wanted to make use of this intriguing, not to mention sturdy, structure. But the proposal had to be scrapped because of a bureaucratic ping-pong game played by the city council and the historical society. The tower was designated a city landmark months after this incident.

The tower has not been in use since 1954 and now houses civil defense equipment and 2-way radio communications equipment, which is used by various city offices.

The Cockpit Project
I pass this store on my way home from work. It's called "The Cockpit Project". They sell exactly what you'd think a store with that name would sell.

This is the view out the other end of the floor where my Tuesday/Wednesday/Friday office is. Sadly, the office doesn't have a window of its own.

This power substation is down the street from home - the electric company painted it up with aquarium themed murals. I dig it.

  Church.

I went out for a downtown happy hour with a few cool cow-orkers Wednesday night, and as I walked to the bus stop to get home, I passed this church that I thought looked cool. I was drunk.

  Bus etiquette, or lack thereof
This dude...

...was all kinds of wrong:
1. Far too white to be rockin' the baggy pants hip hop look.
2. Uber dark sunglasses. On the bus.
3. Mondo grape juice stain on the sleeve.
4. Supremely annoying alert/ringtone/noise thing his Blackberry gave off every time he received a text message. And he got a lot of them in my 20 minute ride home.

  SportShow

Melba and I attended the 75th annual Northwest SportShow at the Minneapolis Convention Center today. We were disappointed. The show is almost completely focused on hunting, fishing, and boating, with almost no attention paid to camping or hiking.

  81.

The previous high temp record for today was 74. We spanked that bitch 'til it called us Papi. 81. Great weather for a top-down drive around Lake Calhoun. Tough to tell from the photo, but there is still a solid layer of ice on the lake.

I don't feel too guilty about posting two days worth of shots from one outing. I took about 75 pictures and spent about 3 hours to get a couple of decent shots.

I went down to the St. Anthony Falls on the Mississippi River to shoot on Monday night. Since it was pretty late, I made sure to shoot a few pictures after midnight so I could cheat a little and cover two days in one outing.

I work in a different building on Wednesdays and Fridays, and the lunchroom at this building has one small corner where sunshine pours in. I always sit at the same table so I can soak up the sun while I eat.

  Screw the cold.

I'm not sure why, but it seemed like a good evening to go for a walk around the neighborhood. I'm tired of the cold weather, but I'm even more tired of being stuck inside. So I went out.

These buildings are run by the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority.

In other news, the Iceholes won tonight! It was a little bit of a hollow victory, since the other team was missing a player - but hey, it counts.

Roadtrip + Snow = Hmm. (edited)
This is what it looks like out the window at work right now:10F and snowing.10 degrees F and snowing at the moment. Melba and I have a 250 mile drive ahead of us this evening (to Lutsen, MN) which might prove to be interesting if the snow keeps up.

I'm posting this pic now, but I may replace it later if I come across anything exciting.

EDIT:

I did come across something more exciting. We made it to the cabin well before midnight, and I shot this a few minutes before midnight:Lutsen! This was only the start of the weekend's debauchery. Mmm... debauchery.

  A dreary day in Minneapolis.
The building that my studio lives in has a neat little stairway up onto the roof, but the door leading out is usually locked. I noticed today that it was unlocked, so I popped out there with my camera. Too bad today was so dreary.Dreary.This shot is taken from the corner of Lake Street and Lyndale Avenue, looking east down Lake.
