Tech support OCD
I was reading THIS, which reminded me of a bunch of little quirks and habits that I have when working with other people's computers.
- Messy desktops. If you've got a pile of files and folders all over your desktop, I have to restrain myself from cleaning up your mess. I don't understand how you can keep your shit straight when it's all over the place like that.
- Twisty phone cords. If your phone cord is all tangled up and twisty, I have to straighten it before I can leave your desk.
- Crud on the bottom of your mouse. If your mouse has dirt on the bottom of it that slows it down on the mousepad, I have to clean it off before I can leave your desk.
- Mac users with missing icons on their dock. If your Mac's dock has a bunch of question marks in it, I have to get rid of them before I can leave your desk.
- Windows users with a screwed up taskbar. If you've got your quick launch icons all covered up on the taskbar, and the task bar is three rows high when you never open more than one app at a time, I have to straighten that shit out before I can leave your desk.
- Open windows. If you've got three dozen Windows Explorer or Finder windows open, I have to minimize, hide, or close all that crap before I can leave your desk.
Those are my worst OCD pet peeves. I have more.

I don't know how people with 50 files all over their desktops find anything. I prefer to keep mine fairly clean.
Also, I can never have a window take up the entire screen. I also want to leave it slightly smaller, so I can see what's behind it. I don't know what my icons are going to do when I can't see them, but I don't want to miss it.
::surreptitiously checks bottom of mouse:: I know! People are pigs.
I read the list of Twitter quirks that guy collected and they don't seem all that abnormal to me. Except for the people who must have the volume level divisible by 5. Everyone knows it's supposed to be divisible by 2. Weirdos.
Keep fighting the good fight of IT support, Steve.
Know what my IT Support pet peeve is? IT techs that suck. Here is why the support at my job does, in a nutshell:
1.) NO common sense. For example, if the big printer won't staple & shows a mysterious error message & the copies are a last minute request from the COO for a meeting in 3 minutes it is perhaps not logical to "solve" the problem by cancelling the job. Don't be cranky when I'm cranky because I actually needed the copies, not just the error message to go away. I actually DO know how to hit "cancel" on the touchscreen.
2.) The IT Support Mailbox. I'm happy to use it. Except, when I use it, I still have to track you down to make sure my issue gets resolved. Thus rendering the IT Support Mailbox useless. Thus I am disinclined to use it. (And emailing the IT Support from my account and signing my name to it is creepy. Stop it.)
I could go on - can I just call you when things break? I promise my desktop - literal and digital - and mouse are spotless. I'm not stupid, and I won't abuse your tech-saviness, I swear.
Wow, I obviously needed to rant! :)
heather: I completely agree about full-screen windows - but only when I'm on a Mac. If I'm using Windows, I like to use full screen. Never realized that until you mentioned it, though.
flurry: I much prefer to have an even number volume level too - it's like starting the microwave at :57. No. Has to be either :60 or :50.
ALP: 1.) I've seen certain print jobs cause problems, which would justify a cancel, but I never cancel jobs just to clear out the queue the way some people do.
2.) That's amazingly lame. They break into your email account and send messages from your address? That's incredibly bad. I'd bring that to HR if it happened to me.
And yes, you can always call me with computer, car, camera, or home electronics troubles.
Rant away!
