today was nice - got to escape the office for most of the day to attend a seminar about SANs (storage area networks) at Apple. sadly, no good apple schwag save for a pen that doesn't look like much, but writes quite smoothly. I love me a good, smooth writin' pen.

oh, and a free lunch. sandwiches. yum.

vendors

we often have outside vendors who come to visit and bring evil things like laptops with powerpoint presentations into our spiffy little conference rooms (i'll save my rant about the evils of powerpoint for another day). the problem starts when these fine folks, almost always a sales droid with very little computer experience, show up and expect their laptop to just magically connect itself to our A/V system two minutes before the start of their meeting.

invariably, they call the helpline in a panic two minutes *after* their meeting was supposed to start, and want someone to drop everything and help them immediately. since i'm the hybrid computer and a/v geek around here, the calls usually come to me. so I drop everything and run along like a good little geek.

why in the hell can't these people plan ahead? gee... maybe even show up 20 minutes early to make sure their crappy powerpoint is gonna work? nooooo... that would make SENSE. much better to procrastinate and go into panic mode when you realize you don't know how to run your own damn laptop and didn't bring a VGA cable anyway.
